On Saturday, January 30th, Coginchaug hosted the Rams of Old Saybrook in a non-league contest. Since the Devils are in the Large school division of the Shoreline conference, and the Rams are in the Small school division, they play each other only once as part of conference play, but have very often in recent years picked up another game with each other to round out non-conference play.
Back on January 12th, the Devils lost at the Rams in their conference game by a 53-64 score, and hoped they could turn that around at home.
And turn it around they did. With two minutes remaining in the first period, the score was tied at 11 each. Powers scored 12 of 20 points in a 20-2 run that did not end until there were just over two minutes remaining in the half. They led by 31-13 at that point. They finished the first half with a 31-18 lead, and led by 49-31 entering the final period.
Old Saybrook did manage to draw within eight points a couple of times in the final period, but some clutch free throw shooting, particularly by Sapia, who was four for four in one and one situations, sealed the deal. The scoring was topped off by a pretty back door cut from Sapia, who got a good feed from Jameson for the lay-up to finish the scoring for the 62-47 Coginchaug victory.
As often happens, Powers led the Devils with 18 points, adding five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Jack Murphy was the leading rebounder with seven. Jack also scored 12 points and blocked two shots. Judson was the leading assist man with six, and also scored ten points, and grabbed four rebounds. Wyskiel scored 12 to round out the double digit scoring. Sapia scored eight points, Griffin Murphy had four rebounds and two points, Hunter had three steals and two assists, and Connor Salva had a rebound and an assist.
This was a significant victory for the Devils, as it proves that they can play with the very best in the Shoreline conference. It’s too bad it does not count in conference standings.
